Brooks family war record

Posted By: Katie Brooks
Date: 28 November 2004

SOmeone was kind enough to send this information to me thinking that it might be my Brooks family. Unfortunately, it's not. However, I am hoping that it will be helpful to someone else so I'm posting it:

The Gibsonburg {Ohio} Derrick, 21 July 1898, page 1, col. 3:
The Brook Family War Record

Hiram Brooke has kindly furnished us with a war record of his family from his grandfather down to his son George, who is now serving in the present war. He has been at work on this record for a long time to get hold of the real facts, and has at last accomplished it.

His grandfather, Wm. Brooke, was a private and a sergeant in the Revolutionary war. He served 18 months in a New Hampshire regiment under Captain Chapman and Colonel Flower. On August 30, 1832, he applied for a pension, which was granted. He was then 72 years of age. His widow, Hepsibah, made application and received a pension for the service of her cousin.

Hiram’s father, Benj. Brooke, served as a private in Captain William Stephenson’s company of infantry, First {Delong’s} Ohio Militia, in the war of 1812. He commenced service September 3, 1813, and served until March 20, 1814.

During the Mexican war Thos. Brooke, a brother of Hiram’s, was a member of Co. G, First Ohio. He did not know anything about this brother being in the war until he started out to look up the record. He never saw this brother.

In the war of the rebellion Benjamin Brooke, Co. A, 43d Ohio, John G. Brooke, Co. E, 15th Ohio, were represented. John was wounded in the battle of Shiloh April 7, 1862.

George W. Brooke, son of Hiram, is a member of Co. L., 19th U.S.I., and is awaiting orders to go to Cuba.
