When Opal was twelve years old, they planned a long railroad journey, and invited Opal to accompany them. She was so delighted, and her mother, Mrs. Lewis McCrea, spared no time or expense in preparing her wardrobe. As the day approached for them to depart, Opal became very ill with appendicitis. Had this taken place today, her life would have been saved, but she passed away. Her beautiful clothing was lain in the bottom of her little casket and buried with her.”)

FREDERICK AND MAGDALENA HUDDLE/HOTTEL

Page 501 of the 1930 book, HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN HOTTEL by Rev. W. D. Huddle and Lulu May Huddle, states, “At first Frederick occupied his father’s homestead near Dayton, Va., and was a slave holder. According to tradition, the slavery question became a troublesome one with him. While he was affiliating with the U. B. Church at Baltimore, Md., he was taught that slavery was wrong whereupon he freed his slaves and in 1833 emigrated with his family to Ohio where slavery, by act of Congress, never could exist. He settled in Montgomery Co., for a while, then in Darke Co. near Versailles, where he and his wife died. They were pioneers in the wilds of Ohio and were members of the U. B. Church. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. Coming to the Buckeye state the orthography of the name was changed to Huddle.”

EARLY RECORDS OF THEIR CHILDREN

The birth dates of the four children listed here are taken from the HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN HOTTEL by Rev. W. D. Huddle and Lulu May Huddle. I imagine these birth dates come from Rockingham County, Virginia, baptism records, but I have not confirmed that. A biography of Levi Huddle in an 1880 Darke County Biographical History states of his parents, Frederick and Magdalena Huddle, “They were the parents of five children, of which two are living at present writing, viz., Catharine and Levi.” I can find no records of the fifth child.

DATES OF THE FAMILY’S MOVES AND FREDERICK HUDDLE’S DEATH

The 1880 biography of Levi Huddle states, “they emigrated to Ohio in 1829, locating in Fairfield Co., where they remained about six months, when they removed to Montgomery Co., eight miles north of Dayton, where they resided until 1833, when they came to Darke Co., locating in Wayne township, near where Webster now stands., where, on the fifth day of June, 1834, he (Frederick) sank peacefully to rest.” The 1833 date for the family’s move to Ohio in the 1930 Hottel family history probably came from an inaccurate reading of that sentence.

The family Bible of Frederick and Magdalena’s daughter, Katharine, contains a section written in the 1850s that states, “Katharine Huddle was Born in Rockingham Co Va March the 30 1824 and Moved to Ohio with her parents to Fairfield Co Ohio March 30, 1830, and in Nov 1830 Moved to Montgomery Co Ohio and April 9 Landed? in dark Co 1835.”

The 1820 census shows the Frederick Huddle family in Rockingham County, Virginia, with one “free colored under 14”, but no slaves, and the 1830 census shows the Frederick Huddle family in Randolph Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Rockingham County, Virginia, Deed Book 8, pages 482 and 483, shows that Frederick Hottle and Magdalena his wife sold Rockingham County land to Samuel Paul for $2000 on February 19, 1829, and provided 175 acres on Beaver Creek in lieu of a $564.89 debt on March 4, 1829. Montgomery County, Ohio, Deed Book O, page 81, shows Frederick Huddle as a resident of Montgomery County when, on April 15, 1830, he purchased, for $540.75, from William Dormer and Prudence his wife, 69+ acres in Section 22, Township 5, Range 5 East. Frederick and Magdalena Huddle sold 4+ acres of that land for $40 to James G. Berry on May 12, 1830 (Montgomery County Deed Book N, page 360) and sold the remaining 65+ acres for $1000 to James G. Berry on Nov. 29, 1834 (Montgomery County Deed Book V, page 133). They are listed as residents of Montgomery County in both transactions. On February 12, 1836, Frederick Huddle purchased about 100 acres of land in Darke County, Ohio, in the west side of Section 31, Township 10, Range 4, about a mile west of the current location of Webster, Ohio. He died less than four months later, on June 5, 1836.

It is my opinion that these deed records prove that the move from Virginia to Fairfield County and then Montgomery County, Ohio took place in 1829 as stated in the biography of Levi Huddle, one year earlier than the Katharine Huddle Bible records state. The move to Fairfield County, where some of Frederick’s Huddle relatives owned land, probably took place in the spring of 1829, and the move to Montgomery County, probably took place in the fall of 1829. On the other hand, the move to Darke County probably took place in 1835, as stated in the Bible records, not 1833 as stated in the Levi Huddle biography. This move to Darke County was one year before Frederick Huddle’s death, as stated in the biography, but Frederick’s death was in 1836, not 1834.

Frederick Huddle’s will is dated May 29, 1836, and confirms that his actual date of death was June 5, 1836. The incorrect June 5, 1834 date first appeared in the 1880 biography of Levi Huddle. It also appears in a biography of Levi Huddle in a 1900 Darke County Biographical History and in the 1930 Hottel family history. Frederick Huddle's headstone gives his date of death as June 5, 1835. However, this headstone is very well made and looks very similar to the 1866 headstone of his wife, Magdalena. It is much better quality than would be expected of an 1835-6 headstone in rural Darke County. I therefore believe that it is likely that Frederick Huddle died in 1836, a crude headstone was placed on his grave when he died that was replaced by the current headstone at a later date, and an incorrect year of death was put on the second stone.

REBECCA HUDDLE

DATES OF REBECCA AND AUSTIN KELLY’S MOVE TO IOWA AND REBECCA KELLY’S DEATH

Montgomery County, Ohio, Deed Book V-2, page 537, states that on Sept. 3, 1853, Austin Kelly and Rebecca Kelly, residents of Montgomery County, Ohio, “personally came before me” to sell the east ½ of the northwest ¼ of Section 5, Township 3, Range 6 East (81+ acres), for $2500 to William Perry of Miami County, Ohio. (This land is in present Butler Township on the border with Miami County.) They probably left for Iowa soon after that date. IOWA COUNTY CEMETERY STONES & HISTORY 1844 - 1975 compiled by Pauline Lillie shows in Hixon (Dayton Cono) Cemetery, “Kelly, Rebeccah wife of Austin, d. Sept. 15, 1851, ae 39 yr.” Since Rebecca was still alive and living in Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1853, I believe the date on the headstone was originally 1854 and the 4 was worn into looking like a 1. That belief was confirmed by a photo of the headstone I received in 2003 from Paulette Wilson, Lake Alfred, FL. The area that was then Cono Twp, Iowa County, Iowa, is now the part of Marengo Twp, Iowa County, Iowa, that is north of the Iowa River.

STEPHEN ANDREW CRAWFORD, FOSTER SON OF REBECCA AND AUSTIN KELLY

The 1850 Butler Twp Montgomery Co OH census shows Austin Kelly 46 PA, Rebecca Kelly 35 VA, Anna Kelly 23 OH, Stephen Kelly 9 OH, and David Mussey 5 OH. I suspected that this was a second marriage for Austin, that ANNA KELLY (c1826-7 - ?) was a child of his first marriage, and that STEPHEN KELLY (c1840-1-?) was a child of his marriage to Rebecca. However, email correspondence with Paulette Wilson, a descendant of Stephen, documented that this Stephen Kelly was actually STEPHEN ANDREW CRAWFORD, a foster son, who was born September 15, 1840 in Miami County OH, married CHRISTINA ALLEN (February 10, 1850, Carroll County OH - April 24, 1929, Cono IA), July 03, 1866 in Benton County IA, had 12 children, and died January 10, 1913 in Cono IA. It appears that Austin and Rebecca Kelly had no children.

AUSTIN KELLY

A January, 1862, letter written by Austin Kelly in Cono, Iowa, to Rebecca’s uncle, Abraham Byrd, in Darke County, Ohio, was in the Bayman family Bible. A transcription of that letter is enclosed. The 1860 Cono Twp, Iowa Co, Iowa, census shows Austin Kelly, age 67 farmer from PA. The microfilms of the censuses definitely show Austin Kelly’s age as 46 in 1850 and 67 in 1860. One of those ages must be wrong. The 1870 Iowa census shows Austin Kelly age 76 living in the second ward of Iowa City in Johnson County. He must have married again, as he was living with Lucy Kelly age 60 keeping home and Anna Page, age 22, school teacher, both born in New Hampshire. no record has been found of his death or burial.

LEVI HUDDLE

Up until the fall of 2001, my information on Levi Huddle’s family came from HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN HOTTEL by Rev. W. D. Huddle and Lulu May Huddle, and biographies of Levi Huddle in 1880 and 1900 Darke County, Ohio, Biographical Histories. That information has now been greatly expanded with information supplied by Heather Douglas.

HANNAH HUDDLE

The birth date for Hannah Huddle and the statement that she died young comes from HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN HOTTEL by Rev. W. D. Huddle and Lulu May Huddle. She is not named in her father’s 1836 will, so she must have died before that date.

KATHARINE HUDDLE

In later life, Katharine (Huddle) Bayman began to spell her first name Catharine. That is the way it is spelled in her obituary. Thanks go to many family members for assisting in the compilation of the list of descendants of James and Katharine (Huddle) Bayman, especially Dale Bayman, now deceased.

FREDERICK HUDDLE Will - May 29, 1836 - Darke County, Ohio Wills A1-238
