Date: 12 January 2003
Martin M. Barr, son of Benjamin and Mary (Mylin) Barr of Lancaster Co., Pa. and grandfather of Glen Barr, was born Jan. 29, 1828 in Lancaster Co. He removed to Darke County, Ohio in 1853 at approximately 25 years of age. Four years after his arrival, on Mar. 18, 1858, he married Elizabeth Parent, daughter of William and Hannah (Elston) Parent. Elizabeth was born Sept. 30, 1838 in Darke Co. and was 20 years old at the time of their marriage. No early pictures of Martin and Elizabeth have survived that I am aware of.
The left picture below is of Martin M. Barr (standing) and his brother, Benjamin Barr, who resided in Lancaster Co. It is reported in one of the Lancaster Co. histories that Benjamin visited Darke Co. with the intention to move there but decided to return to Pa. That was an earlier time than the picture below which was taken in Union City during another visit.
Pictured beside Martin and Benjamin's photograph is Elizabeth (Parent) Barr. Glen always described her as a small, bird-like woman. This is the only picture that I have of her.
Martin (1828-1921) and Elizabeth (1838-1909) are buried in the Greenville Cemetery in Greenville, Ohio. Beside them lie their firstborn infant son, Benjamin; their young son Hamlin (or Hanlin); unmarried son Sherman; son Milo and his first wife Ollie Teal; son Blaine and wife Hazel Woodbury; daughter Sue and husband Ernest "Doc" Dettman; and Martin E. Barr, who was the infant brother of Glen Barr (son of Thad and Pearl (Henning) Barr) and a grandson to Martin and Elizabeth.
