Posted By: Leland Rice
Date: 19 November 2001
SOURCE: This would be published in the Greenville “Advocate” about 12-13 September, 1917.
This is the article that was published. The Regular obituary is shown below, being just slightly shorter than the article and a 3rd death notice was also published, as seen at the end of this post.
“Sunday morning about 9:30 occured the death of Mrs. Anna Biddle, after an illness of only a few weeks. Mrs. Biddle was afflicted with tubercular trouble, affecting the intestines, which was the cause of her death.
Anna Biddle was born in German Township, Darke Co., Ohio, February 14th, 1846, and died September 9, 1917, aged 71 years, 6 months and 27 days. Her parents, Jacob H. and Cristina Smelker were both natives of Baden, Germany, and emigrated to America in 1819, leaving Germany May 13th and landing in Baltimore, Md, August 1st. They were the parents of 14 children, Mrs. Biddle being the 13th child.
She was united in marriage to John Biddle, who departed this life May 27th, 1916. To this union were born two daughters and one son, who were all at the bed-side of their mother to render the last loving services.
Mr. And Mrs. Biddle were charter members of the Universalist church at Palestine, O., where they lived their lives together; and a few months before Mr. Biddle died they renewed their faith in the Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of man and were baptized by the Rev. Williams who was at that time pastor of the church.
After the death of her companion, Mrs. Biddle made her home at New Madison with her daughter, Mrs. Cora Hyde, under who loving care she lived until death. She was never a strong woman but was at all times a very patient and loving mother and showed careful thought of the interests of her family. During her last sickness she maintained the same loving spirit thru all her suffering and expressed to her family her desire to depart this life and go where her companion is. She leaves to mourn their loss three children, Nora Lowdenslager, Cora Hyde and Orlando Biddle, eleven granchildren, three great-grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, who was at the bed-side of Mrs. Biddle to bid her good-bye before Mrs. Miller left for Michigan just a few days ago to spend the winter with her son, not knowing of course that it was to be the last good-bye here on earth.
The funeral services were held from the Universalist Church in Palestine Tuesday, September 11 at 2 o’clock; sermon by Rev. C. W. Hoeffer of Richmond, Ind. Burial was made at Palestine.”
