John Curtis Henning
EX-SHERIFF JOHN C. HENNING IS CALLED AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS
A MAN HOW HELPED TO MAKE HISTORY IN RANDOLPH COUNTYJohn C. Henning, one of the most widely know men in Randolph and Darke counties, passed away last evening at his home on West Oak street, after an illness extending over a period of three years during which he was an invalid. Last Thanksgiving his condition became alarming, and it was known then that was the beginning of the end. Although everything possible was done for him during that time he never rallied or improved and he died Thursday night at 8:35.
John Curtis Henning was born Sept. 13, 1861, on a farm west of Greenville about four miles and her he grew to manhood, and attended school. He was united in marriage to Mary Clarissa Stump, Dec. 20, 1884 [sic] , and to this union four children were born as follows: Bessie Wilkerson, Winchester, Charles G. Henning, Muncie, Ind., J. Raymond Henning of Dunkirk, and James W. Henning of Chicago.
In 1908 the family moved to Union City and John Henning accepted a place with the Pierce Elevator Co. During this time he was appointed might police and later was made chief of police of Union City. So well did he perform his duties in that important position that in 1912 he was elected sheriff of Randolph county on the democratic ticket. He was re-elected in 1914 and served altogether four years as sheriff. This was a great compliment to him personally for the was the only man who was ever elected sheriff on the democratic ticket. And it may further be said that at no time have the duties of the office of sheriff been better performed than under John C. Henning.
He was always actuated by right and was absolutely honest in his dealing both while in office and with his fellow man. He was of a very genial disposition and loved a good story, not only to hear them but to tell them and his fund of stories seemed to be inexhaustible. His hearty laugh will be long remembered in the circles that knew him best. He was a good father to his children and always did all he could for them which is why probably that all four have been very successful.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and Methodist church and up to the time when ill health overtook him, he was a valued member of the K. of P. Lodge.
Besides the widow and foor[sic] children he is survived by eight grandchildren.
The funeral arrangement will be found elsewhere in the Times.
NOTE: The marriage date given above in incorrect. It should be Dec. 20, 1883 (not 1884).
