Again has the dark-winged Death Angel entered into our midst and borne away a loving husband and a kind father, and honored citizen and friend in the person of John English, who was called to the higher life November 7, 1894 at the age of 53 years, 2 months, 1 day. Left to mourn are a devoted wife, 4 loving children, 1 brother and 4 sisters. He was married May 1871 to Miss Anna Pitsenbarger, and to them were given 5 children. One of them, a lovely daughter, Dolly, preceded him to the spirit land. He was chosen at the late election to fill the responsible position of Sheriff. His boyhood was spent on his father's farm near Versailles, Darke County, Ohio. He enlisted in the 11th Ohio for 90 days, at the close of which time he joined the 40th Ohio for 3 years, then re-enlisted in the 51st Ohio, receiving a commission of a Second Lieut. on February 9, 1864, which was followed a few days later by a promotion to first Lieutenancy. He was assigned to Company D, and served till the end of the war, being honorably discharged in Victoria, Texas on October 2, 1865. He was wounded in the right arm at the Battle of Chicamauga September 30, 1863. He was a member of the G.A.R. His funeral took place from the M. E. Church on Saturday, November 10, Reverends Krider and Axtell officiating, after which the remains were borne to Green Park Cemetery and laid to rest beside his father.
[NOTE: Green Park Cemetery is in Portland, IN. John's father was buried in English Cemetery near Versailles, OH.]
