Former Grocery Store Operator is Dead at 79
Thaddeus (Thad) Stevens Barr, 79, a retired grocery store operator, passed away at his residence, 419 North High street, Union City, at 5:50 p. m. Wednesday following a one-year illness.
A lifelong resident of the Union City community, Mr. Barr was born on July 14, 1867 on the old Barr homestead, south of the city off of the Springhill road. He was the son of the late Martin and Elizabeth Parent-Barr, early settlers of the community. After attending the Washington township school, Mr. Barr was married to Pearl Henning in Darke County in 1891.
For many years he followed the occupation of farming until he came to the city and held an interest in a hardware business. Later he sold his interest in the hardware store and went to Cosmos where he operated a grocery store for nine years. He sold his Cosmos business in 1921 and returned to the city where he managed a grocery store at the High street address until his retirement nine years ago.
Mr. Barr was a member of the Union City Methodist church and had belonged to the Knights of Pythias.
Besides the wife, he leaves one son, Glen G. Barr, Union City; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Matt Glunt, Mrs. Benjamin Glunt and Mrs. Ernest Dettman, all of Union City, and two brothers, Blaine Barr, Union City, and Milo Barr, Ansonia. One son, Martin Edwin, and three brothers and one sister preceded Mr. Barr in death.
Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Brooks and Sons funeral home in Union City in charge of Rev. E. E. Kaufman. Burial will be in the Union City cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home any time.

Thaddeus Barr, 79 years old, died at his residence, 419 North High St., Wednesday evening after a long illness of one year. He had resided in this community all his life and was a retired groceryman. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are the widow, Pearl, one son, Glen of Union City, three granddaughters and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 P.M. at the Brooks Funeral Home here with the Rev. E.E. Kauffman officiating.
Burial will be in Union City Cemetery.
NOTE: Thad was my grandfather. He died two weeks after I was born so I never was able to know him.
