Almena Jobes, City's Oldest Resident, Dies
Death of Central Avenue Woman Occurs at Three A.M. Today – Heath Had Failed Since Celebration of 99th Birthday on August 30 – Had Lived in Ohio Since 1845
Mrs. Almena H. Jobes, Greenville’s oldest resident died at three a.m. today at her late home, 218 Central Avenue.
On August 30, Mrs. Jobes celebrated her 99th birthday and relatives state that her health decline dated from that day. Death was attributed to general infirmities of age.
Active until the past few days of her extended life, Mrs. Jobes took great pleasure in recounting experiences of her girlhood days especially the long overland trip her family made to Ohio from Allentown, Pa., in 1845.
The family settled near Ft. Jefferson, when the deceased was 10 years old, and since that time she had resided in Darke county.
She was the widow of the late Judge John A. Jobes, a Civil War physician, who was elected to the Darke County probate court bench in 1875 and served two terms.
Their union was blessed by seven children, two of whom died in infancy. Mr. Jobes has been dead since 1903.
On the Day of her 99th birthday celebration, Mrs. Jobes had expressed the hope that she might live to be 100, and relatives are grief-stricken that her last wish could not be fulfilled.
The immediate survivors include five children, four sons, and one daughter. The children are Frank H. Jobes, Attorney George A. Jobes, E. C. Jobes and L. U. Jobes, this city, and Mrs. Almena (Kit) Brenneman, who resides at Dayton, Ohio.
A brother, C. L. Hecker, lives at Tippecanoe City.
Funeral services will be conducted from the residence at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Burial will be made in the Greenville cemetery.
