I think more than one source has reported this story. One version was that one of the brothers was killed when trapped between the boat and the shore.

The place where they worked was a failed "pich tar" operation and the families were left in a terrible condition by their sponsors. Some of the original families remained in New York while others blazed a trail to Pennsylvania (near present day Reading).

Mr. T. Stahl managed to do it in a single paragraph:

"From what I have been told, Jacques LaBasseur and two of his brothers were French Hugenots (protestants) who escaped Catholic persecution in France. They fled to the Rhineland Palatinate in Germany. The surname was Germanicized to Basharr. At some time, the 3 left Germany and went back to LaHavre, France where they stole a barge and took it to England. The 3 brothers left England for America. They became indentured servants (having to work for a 7 year period to pay for their passage). The surname was Anglicized to Bashore. One of the brothers was killed (drowned) while working in New York. Jacques settled in Pennsylvania and was the start of the Bashore clan of Schuylkill County (and elsewhere). William Bashore married Mathilda Flammer (they were my greatgrandparents). They had 12 children. Clayton, the 3rd oldest was my grandfather."
