Re: Abbotsville Cemetery

Dear Marti, I have a copy here at home of the inscriptions taken in 1964 from the stones that were in the original Abbottsville Cemetery at that time, but I did not find either name listed. This original Abbottsville Cemetery began as a church cemetery in the 1830s; the church was gone for many years before 1964 and was not connected with the church now standing in the new Abbottsville Cemetery a short distance away.
The Old Abbottsville Cemetery was abandoned when the new one was established in 1878. At that time, some of the bodies were moved to the new cemetery, some were taken elsewhere, and the rest are still in this cemetery. Only those with family members still living were moved because they couldn't be moved without legal permission.
The old cemetery records were lost in a fire somewhere in the distant past, so there are no records of who is still buried there, or the locations of the graves. Many of the headstones had been broken over the years, so in the summer of 1998 it was decided to preserve the remaining stones by adding a base and lining them up in rows. The township trustees also installed a granite monument marking the site of the original Abbottsville Cemetery.
It is possible that they were moved to the new cemetery, but I only have a partial list of inscriptions from the new cemetery here at home so I am not able to search for them at the present. But I will look for their names in the inscription book the next time I am at the library and let you know what I find.
Let me know if I can help in any other way.
Respectfully, Debbie Cunningham Barga
