Page Number 350CLAND: John Fourman and Sarah Baker located on the farm where they lived out their lives in 1846 in Van Buren Twp., Darke County, Ohio. They cut the first stick of timber, made an opening, and built a small frame house with lumber sawed from a mill of their own "put up." From this beginning they toiled on, enduring the hardships and deprivations, gradually making improvements. At one time John had 1000 acres of land, but gave all but 241 acres to his children. That would indicate an immense amount of labor had been performed, and what a fine start he gave his children.
RELIGION: Sarah Fourman was a member of the Church of the Brethren. (Old German Baptist Church).
OBITUARY: John Fourman Jr., age 90 years, 1 month and 20 days. He came to Ohio in 1832 with his parents. He lived on their claim in the then dense forest northeast of Arcanum. He was married to Sarah Baker, June 18, 1845, to whom was born 15 children. There are now living 8 sons and 3 daughters, 66 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren. His wife and the Mother died May 27, 1881. On June 27, 1891 he married his present bereaved companion, who was then Mrs. Catherine Colbertson.
He lived in the same community for 79 years, and was an industrious and hard working man and always provided well for his family. He was baptized by the Lutheran Church in infancy, but never united with any Church.
