Stover/Christian/Bigler
Posted By: Meredith Niles
Date: 4 October 2005
I am looking for information on my g-g-grandparents, Charles Wesley Stover (b. 28 Jun 1851, possibly in Bradford) and Rachel Christian (b. 16 Sep 1854, possibly in Versailles). (Their son Charles Walter Stover married Ada Florence Huber; Walter and Ada's son Walter Stover is my grandfather.)
The 1900 Census shows Charles Wesley and Rachel Stover living together in Wayne Township, Darke County, with three children: Mary M. Stover (b. Aug 1884), Charles Walter Stover (b. 20 Jun 1892, known as Walter), and Bertha V. Stover (b. Jul 1894). The 1910 Census shows Rachel living in Wayne Township with a son Samuel (b. about 1883), and children Walter and Bertha. This census shows her marital status as divorced. Rachel shows up again on the 1920 Census, living in Versailles, Wayne Township with her daughter Bertha, son Walter and his new wife and their infant daughter; this time, she lists her marital status as widowed, so I assume that Charles Wesley Stover died before 1920. The only mention I can find of him after he left her house is a reference to a Charles Stover living with a David and Sara Bigler in Gettysburg, Adams Township in 1910 -- David is listed as a medical doctor, and the Charles Stover living with them is listed as an uncle. I am assuming that this Charles Stover may be my g-g-grandfather because their ages and the information he has given about the birthplaces of his parents match.
I do not have any other information about the parents, siblings, or deaths of Charles Wesley Stover and Rachel Christian Stover, but I would like to flesh out this part out my genealogy. The only leads I have about their parents are based on the Census data: Charles says in 1900 and 1910 that his father was born in Maryland and his mother in Pennsylvania, and Rachel says in 1910 and 1920 that her father was born in Ohio and mother in Pennsylvania (although she does say in 1900 that they are both born in Pennsylvania). The only other possible lead is through Charles's niece and nephew, David and Sara Bigler, so I am looking for information on that family as well. I have read that there was a Bigler family who came to Darke County from Washington County, PA, so maybe there is a connection there.
Any information that you could give me would be most helpful. Thanks very much in advance.
Sincerely,
Meredith Niles
