Re: death record

Reverend Father John A. Gnau was the parish priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, Ohio from 1915-1953. The St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery is the only Catholic cemetery in Greenville, but there are others in Darke County. I am in the process of photographing each stone and researching the burials in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, and there is no stone with the name John I. Savage on it at the present time. That does not mean he is not buried there -- it just means that there hasn't been a stone there for quite some time, if ever.
The rectory might have a record of his burial. If you write there, you should include a self-addressed and stamped business-size envelope they can use to reply. The staff is very busy there, so a written reply is better than a phone call. The address is St, Mary's Catholic Church, 233 West Third Street, Greenville, OH 45331.
I checked the index of Lois Ann Baker's book, "Catholic Cemeteries in Versailles, Ohio and Neighboring Areas" which has all of the Catholic cemeteries in Darke County in it, but there are no Savages listed at all in that index. Those inscriptions were taken in the early 1990s, so if he had a stone in any of them, the inscription would be in this book.
There are no Savages in the six funeral home record books that I have either. The name "Jno Chapin" is not familiar to me, so I can't help you with that. My high school Latin teacher was named John Savage, but that was in the late 1960s so it wasn't the one you're looking for. Good luck with your search.
