(Pieternella) Petronella (?) Harter - Johann Georg
Posted By: Tarkus
Date: 7 August 2006
Does anyone have information on a (Pieternella) Petronella (?) married to a Harter. I attended a "Harter" family reunion (of the Mohawk Valley Harters (NY). They had three Johann George Harters, one of which has turned up on several searches.
However there were two Johan Georg Harters (b. unknown) that I had never seen before. I think that it may turn out that the two may be one individual because the sketchy data is identical as to life and mother. Petronella [?]. Variants of Petronella are Pieternella and Elnora.
Both seem to be in the family of the sons of Johann (Hans) Peter Harter (Hardter, Herdter) - Johann Nicholas Harter (b. 1660) m Anna Eva [?] Johann Cristophel (Stoffel) Harter (1667).
While one Johann Georg would seem to be the son of Johann Cristophel. The other would be the grandson of Johann Nicholas and the child of a second Johann Nicholas (b. 1708) and the same Petronella listed as a spouse of Johann Cristophel on another branch. I also have a Maria Elizabeth Bender as a spouse of Johann Cristophel.
Further research in this area may complete a link to some of the Wollam, Ullom, Ulm families and the Bashore, Baashore families who migrated from the Mohawk Valliey (NY) to Tulpehocken (PA) and beyond (MD, VA, NC, TN, OH, etc.)
Or it could just be another interesting coincidence.
Given that many of the New York Harters were established at West Camp, Ulster by the very early 1700s. I think that death dates in Pfalsdorf Germany or Horn, Rheinland-Pfalz, in the 1700s or 1800s do not make a lot of sense. More likely in the 1700s, but less so in the 1800s.
The families of the migration to the failed project in New York were already displaced from Germany before the move to New York. Conditions in New York were harsh because the notion of getting pitch from pines in New York was not a good one. The rough journey from New York to Tulpehocken is well documented for the first settlers, but not so for later settlers like Conrad Weiser was more a matter of course. To date. I know of no connection of Joahnn Georg (and other varients) to the Mohawk Valley Harters, nor to any other known group of Harters.
Bob, I presume you are already seeing this. I'll send an update if I find anything more specific. We have two years til the 100th Harter Reunion in New York. Seems like sufficient time to investigate this new lead.
